Verify Internet Security Settings

As I stated in my article Improve E-mail Security "Some types of computer viruses and Trojans allow a malicious individual to gain access to and remotely control your computer. The security settings of your e-mail client (Outlook Express) or Internet browser could be purposely modified and weakened. Once your security settings are reduced a malicious individual has increased the ease and ways in which you and your computer can be exploited."

In the following section we verify the security settings of the "Restricted sites" zone. The Restricted sites zone should be assigned the "High" security level by default. Verifying these settings will ensure you are familiar with how and where they can be modified. We also covered this section in my article/tutorial on how to "Improve E-mail Security".
Open/run Internet Explorer:

  • click "Tools" on the menu bar
  • then "Internet Options..."
Internet Options

Click the:

  • "Security" tab then
  • "Restricted sites" icon (red ball) to highlight it
Internet options dialog

You should see a "slider" in its top most or "High" position (see image above). If you do not see the slider click the "Default Level" button.

Internet options

This will restore the safer/default high level security settings. Do not click the "Apply" or "OK" buttons at this point. We will make further changes using this dialog box in the following section "Improve Internet Security".
