Block "Pop-up" Windows
Do you hate those annoying seperate advertising windows (called popups) that
appear (pop-up) when you visit some Web sites. Windows XP with service pack 2 (SP2)
updates Internet Explorer and adds "pop-up" blocking functionality.
SP2 is FREE and it provides several important safety/security updates.
To control pop-up blocker settings open/run Internet Explorer and click:
- "Tools" on the menu bar
- "Popup Blocker"
- "Popup Blocker Settings..."
|
| |
| |
Pop-up blocker has a default setting of "Medium" which will block most advertising
pop-up windows. You will hear a default sound (if sound is installed/enabled) and
see the "Information Bar" if a pop-up is blocked. The "Information Bar" appears
at the top of Internet Explorer, just above the displayed Web page. Some Web sites
legitimately use pop-up windows (our site does) to display information in a sperate
window. If you want to see the contents of a blocked pop-up window click
:
- the "Information Bar"
- "Allow Blocked Content..."
- "Yes" to the "Security Warning" to run active content
The default setting of "Medium" allows popups you activate by clicking a link or
button on a Web page. You can control how specific Web sites use popups.
In the "Pop-up Blocker Settings" dialog, under "Address of Web site to allow:"
- type the address of the site in the box
- click the "Add" button
- choose the filter level to apply
|
| |
|
To choose the level of pop-up blocking click:
- the drop down arrow under the "Filter Level:" heading (see image above)
- choose "Low", Medium or High"
Setting the pop-up blocker to "High" eliminates almost all pop-up windows.
As I mentioned earlier the "High" setting also prevents the legitimate
use of pop-up windows on some Web sites (our site).

Install Available Updates
New ways to target and circumvent your security through the software installed on
your computer are constantly developed and evolving. Like any software/application
on your computer you need to keep Internet Explorer current with the latest
security fixes and updates.
