Why use the PortableApps Suite?
-
The PortableApps Suite is perfect for someone who travels, works on and between
multiple computers at work, home or school.
-
You may be able to use applications not provided at work, school, internet cafes
or by your employers IT department. NOTE: You will need to be able to install the
device/drive to the computer you will run the PortableApps Suite from. Some
computer systems may be configured to limit the ability of users to install new
devices (usually work or school).
-
If you develop a problem with your computer you can move your PortableApps drive
to another backup computer. You will have all the applications you need immediately
available to you. If you store your important files on the same drive you are ready
to go back to work or play.
-
When you unplug your USB drive nothing is left behind and your personal
files, data, settings and preferences come with you. Your settings and preferences
for all applications are saved on the drive the PortableApps Suite is installed
on. For example, if you use portable Firefox your passwords, bookmarks, extensions,
cookies and browsing history will be saved. NOTE: Firefox is an excellent
alternative to Microsoft's Internet browser "Internet Explorer".
-
The installation and applications are small and can be easily backed up and
stored/archived along with your files.
-
The PortableApps Suite installed on a portable drive is more easily transported
than a laptop. You do not have to worry about your expensive laptop and accessories
getting damaged, lost or stolen.

Customize The PortableApps Suite
I customize my installation of the PortableApps Suite. I download the "Base Edition"
of the PortableApps.com Suite. It contains the basics you need.
The Base Edition is a download of about 1 MB compared to the "Standard"
version which is over 85 MB (at the time I wrote this article). I then download
and install each individual application I want from the
PortableApps
Directory which lists all the currently available applications. I then add any
additional applications I use that are not available with the PortableApps Suite.
I fit everything I need on a thumb/flash drive with a capacity of only 512 Megabytes.
With everything I need installed I have over 300 Megabytes of space left.
Applications that are not included with the PortableApps Suite can sometimes be
installed and accessed from the PortableApps menu. For example, one of the
applications I use to create and edit this Web site is the free
NoteTab Lite. It installs and operates/runs perfectly
from the PortableApps installation. Another application I added is
DeepBurner Free
(portable edition). DeepBurner is a CD/DVD burning/creation application. I occasionally
use DeepBurner to copy/rescue files from crippled computers. When and how well
this works depends on the nature of the computer problem.
Once you've installed the portable applications and transferred your files,
Internet bookmarks, etc. you will want to establish a backup routine. A simple
backup program is included with all versions of the PortableApps Suite. You may
want to consider using the automatic backup and file syncing capabilities of
Allway Sync. Allway Sync is free of charge and has more
features and capabilities than the stock backup utility included with the
PortableApps Suite. Allway Sync is intended to be installed on your computer.
A version called Allway Sync 'n' Go can be used with the PortableApps Suite. You
need to download the "portable app" version of Allway Sync 'n' Go. Double left
click on the "7zip" file you've downloaded to "unpack or de-compress" it. Next
you need to copy the folder (directory) "Allway Sync 'n' Go" to the "PortableApps"
folder of your portable drive. A link to Allway Sync 'n' Go should automatically
be added to the PortableApps menu. NOTE: I'm assuming you've already installed
the PortableApps Suite on your portable drive.

Portable Security
Will you carry private personal or business information on the drive with your
PortableApps Suite installation? You are taking a risk if you open and view
sensitive files/information on an untrusted computer. How will you verify the
security of a computer you do not own and monitor? It is possible for the
information stored on a portable drive to be stolen without your knowledge.
There are "utilities" designed for the sole purpose of stealing information from
thumb/flash and other portable drives. One example is a small application called
"USBDumper". USBDumper could be installed and operational without your knowledge
on any computer you use. USBDumper automatically copies the entire contents of a
USB device once it has been inserted/plugged into a computer. Another similar
"utility" called "USB Hacksaw" will copy the contents of a USB drive and then send
the contents to a predefined e-mail address. I'm sure there are other "utilities"
or derivatives with a similar function.

|
NOTE: For those of you who are extremely security conscious you could boot an
untrusted computer using a bootable, read only CD/DVD installation of
BartPE or UBCD4Win.
You can then access your portable drive once the computer has booted. This would
allow you to bypass viruses, spyware and any "utilities" like USBDumper that may
be installed on the untrusted computer.
