The authors description above may not mean much to those of you who don't know what an FTP client/program is. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. An FTP program (called a client, example: Filezilla) is used to upload (send) or download (retrieve) files to and from a remote computer. It can be used between computers on a local computer network or to transfer files to and from computers located on the Internet.

An example of a how an FTP client can be used is to upload the images and pages for a Web site. Our Web site www.AdvPC.net (as simple as it is) was uploaded to the computer (server) it is hosted on using FileZilla. If you build or are learning how to build Web sites you will want FileZilla in your toolbox. Of course an FTP client (FileZilla) can also be used to download your favorite games and other software from many companies around the world.

I've tested and used 6 or 7 different FTP programs in the past. FileZilla is my favorite to date for the Windows operating system. It is fast, simple to use, offers just the right amount of features and complexity for almost any FTP work. The authors of the program have taken the time to provide useful documentation on their Web site. The help file included with FileZilla should be sufficient to get you started using the program. If you have further questions an active online forum can be accessed from the FileZilla Web site. The forum provides an interactive environment where you can ask questions or help others. Microsoft Windows users will probably find it most convenient to download the version of FileZilla packaged as an executable .exe (32-bit Windows). Oh, and did I mention it is FREE. Even though it's FREE you are not forced to view annoying advertising or screens nagging you for money.

Creating software like FileZilla takes a lot of time (time is money), patience and work. If you use this program I strongly suggest you donate a few dollars to help continue the development of FileZilla. The authors/creators of FileZilla provide a link from their Web site that allows you to donate money.
Click here to view an image of the program.

Click download software image link to download a FREE version of this program. You will want to download the file that ends with "setup.exe".

Warning: All the software I suggest is popular and well tested. However, any time you add a program/application or hardware device to your computer you run the risk of a problem developing with your computer. Always back up important files on your computer before installing any new program/application or device. You download and install any new software at your risk.

If you have any comments on how I might improve this information please offer your suggestions. Thanks, Tom
