Truecrypt Encryption Tutorial
Note: For this tutorial I assume you know how to download software
from the Internet. The process is the same for music, movies, pictures. TrueCrypt
and other software available for download from the Internet is often packaged as
a compressed archive. You need to understand how to "extract/unpack" the files
required to install TrueCrypt. I also assume you know how to install new
software/applications to your computer.
|
| |
|
You need to have "Administrator privileges" to install TrueCrypt on versions of
Microsoft windows to include Windows 2000, XP, 2003. Not sure what I'm talking
about? Have you previously installed new software/applications to the computer
you are about to install TrueCrypt on? If the answer to this question is yes
and the installation was successful you can begin the tutorial.
|
| |
|
* If you have not already done so, please
download,
extract and install TrueCrypt.

Setup TrueCrypt:
|
|
1) Start/run TrueCrypt by double clicking the shortcut placed on your desktop or
click the "start button" then "All Programs" then TrueCrypt. TrueCrypt's main
window will open to allow you to begin the setup process.
|
| |
|
2) Click the "Create Volume" button (see below). The "TrueCrypt Volume Creation
Wizard" will appear. I will discuss what a TrueCrypt "volume" is later in this
tutorial when we begin to actually use TrueCrypt.
|
| |
|
| |
|
3) Randomly move your mouse cursor/arrow within the "TrueCrypt Volume Creation Wizard"
window. TrueCrypt uses this random movement to improve the strength of the key it will use
to encrypt/protect your files. The longer and more randomly you move your mouse
the better. Need a little vacation time? While you move your mouse grit your teeth and
intermittently mumble "I wish the voices would stop". I usually time 1 to 2 minutes.
If I go longer people begin looking at me funny.

|
| |
|
Click the "Next >" button In the following step you will choose a
location and name for the volume/container you will use to store/encrypt
files.
