self decrypting files
|
|
Cryptainer LE allows you to securely send documents
to anyone by creating "self decrypting files". A "self decrypting file" is any file
that is encrypted/scrambled and packaged in such a way that it can be automatically
unencrypted by entering a password. The recipient of a "self decrypting
file" does not need to have Cryptainer LE or any special software installed on
their computer. The self decrypting file is in a sense a package that
holds what you want to send. However, the contents of the package are stored in
an encrypted state. The information the "self decrypting file" contains is
protected and can be safely sent over the Internet as an attachment to e-mail.

|
As I mentioned earlier in this article, e-mail is not a safe/secure method to transmit
sensitive business or personal information. To send information safely over the Internet
it must be encrypted. In addition to securing your information while it is transit
the self decrypting file will also remain secure while it is stored on the recipient's
computer. Cryptainer LE can be used to encrypt any file you want to secure whether
it is a letter you typed on your favorite word processing program or a customer list
stored in a spreadsheet or database file.

To create a self decrypting file using Cryptainer LE:
|
| |
|
1) Create a strong password. I suggest using a program like
Password Agent Lite to easily generate a good random
password. Password Agent Lite also encrypts and securely stores all your passwords.
The password will be used when you create your self encrypting file. You will need
to give the password to the recipient of your self decrypting file so they can
unlock the file and view it. A telephone call would be an excellent method
to deliver the password. Subsequent future password changes could be
sent using self decrypting files.
|
| |
|
2) Encrypt the file with Cryptainer LE using the self decrypting
file option (click "Secure Email" button on the tool bar then "Encrypt File to Send
by Email".
|
| |
|
| |
|
3) Locate the file you want to encrypt by clicking the yellow folder/browse
button (circled in red below) from within the new pop up window to select the file that
you want to encrypt.
|
| |
|
4) Enter a password in the password field. Remember, the recipient will need this
password to decrypt the file and view it.
|
| |
|
| |
|
5) Click the "Create Encrypted Self-Extractor (.EXE) File..." button to encrypt the file
(see image above).
|
| |
|
6) Send an e-mail to the recipient of your self decrypting file. Include the self decrypting
file as an attachment to the e-mail. Explain that they simply needs to double left click the
attachment and enter the password.
