Adding Files To Your Encrypted Volume
To add/remove/delete files to and from your Cryptainer volume you must "load" (mount)
the volume. A volume is automatically loaded when you create a new one. When you
start/run Cryptainer it will automatically attempt to load the last volume you
used. You can manually load a vault by clicking on the load button on Cryptainer's
main interface (see image below). You are then prompted to enter the password for
the volume/vault. The volume will open allowing you to view its contents.

|
There are several ways in which to add files to a Cryptainer volume.
1. You can select a file by left clicking on it, holding your mouse button down and
dragging it into the right hand side of a loaded volumes window (see following image).
Let go of your mouse button to drop/copy the file into your vault. This process is
often referred to as "dragging and dropping". You should see the file appear in the
right hand window.
|
| |
|
| |
|
2. You can right click a file, select "Send To" and choose the name of your Cryptainer
volume to copy the file to it. Your encrypted volume will be displayed as a removable
storage device in "My computer" (see following image). 3) You can drag and drop files on
to the Cryptainer volume/drive icon in "My Computer". Double clicking the drive
icon allows you to access all the files in your encrypted volume.
|
| |
|
|
Note: If you operate your computer from a "limited user" account
the Cryptainer volume/drive will be listed in "My Computer" as simply a "Removable
Disk" regardless of the label you assigned when the volume was created. This could
be confusing if you have a thumb/flash or other removable drive/s installed.
|
| |
| Click the "Unload" button on Cryptainer's main window when
you are finished working with files stored in your encrypted volume. You can also
shut down Cryptainer to "Unload" (close) and secure the files stored within an
Cryptainer volume. If Cryptainer is open/running it's icon will be located in the
system tray near your computers clock. Cryptainer's program icon/picture looks
like a small gold triangle with a key hole in the center. Double click the icon
any time you need to access Cryptainer's main window.

Final Thoughts & Suggestions
Files stored in a Cryptainer volume are only protected when the volume is
unloaded/unmounted. Anyone who has physical access to your computer and can log
on/access your session has access to all files/information/data stored on a loaded/mounted
Cryptainer volume. Under these same circumstances anyone who has remote access
to your computer would also have access to anything stored in your encrypted volume.
Some types of computer
"Trojans"
and "worms"
allow a malicious individual to remotely access your computer when it is running
and connected to the Internet or possibly a local network (if your computer is
connected to a network).
It is best to:
-
Load a volume only when you need access to files/data/information stored in it.
-
Install both an antivirus and spyware solution on your computer/s. If you can not
afford to purchase these products I suggest you try the FREE
version of AVG Antivirus and either Ad-Aware SE
or Spybot Search which are both dependable, FREE anti
spyware solutions.
-
Routinely create a backup of your encrypted volume. Encrypted volumes remain
encrypted irregardless of the medium (CD/DVD ROM, portable drive) you use to
store your backup.

Take a minute to review other ways you can "Enhance
Computer Safety".

Do you need to encrypt, protect and store larger amounts of information/files/data
than the 25 Megabytes allowed using Cryptainer LE? You might consider purchasing
Cryptainer PE which allows you to store and encrypt up to 25 gigabytes. You may
want to learn more about "TrueCrypt", one of my
favorite FREE encryption products. It is similar in many ways to Cryptainer.

TrueCrypt can also be used to create encrypted "volumes" that can store and protect
important computer files/information/data. A TrueCrypt "volume" is essentially the
same concept as a Cryptainer "volume". Both can be used to store your files/information
in an encrypted state. Both can be used as a container to store and protect important
files sent by e-mail. TrueCrypt allows you to store substantially more
(8,589,934,592 gigabytes) than either Cryptainer LE or PE. I've written a
tutorial to help you get started using TrueCrypt.
TrueCrypt does not have the functionality to create "self decrypting files" you
can send by e-mail. I discuss self decrypting files later in this tutorial.
