restoring a drive image

Restoring a drive image is just as simple as creating one. Begin by choosing the word "Restore" in the DriveImage XML main window. The steps are similar to to what we covered in the section on disk image creation. WARNING: The restore process will over write anything located on the drive or partition you are restoring to. Anything stored on the destination drive/partition will be lost. Verify you are restoring the correct drive image to the correct destination partition or drive. If you restore the wrong disk image your computer may not operate as you expect.

schedule automatic backups

Schedule automatic drive image creation using DriveImage XML and Windows "Task Scheduler". Why take the chance that you will forget to create a drive image? The one time you forget to create your drive image is the time you will need it most. As I mentioned earlier in this article you should create a new drive image before you make changes to your computer.

I also suggest you schedule the automatic creation of a new drive image once per week. Create a folder/directory called "weekly" (or whatever works for you) to store your drive image files. Each subsequent new disk image file will overwrite the previous one. Overwriting your old image will limit how much hard drive space is used. You will always have a recent disk image to restore in an emergency. If you develop a problem you will have at most one week of changes to your computer to recover. You will have to reinstall security updates/patches and new software added (if any) during that time period. Any hardware additions, removals or configuration changes made during that week would also need to be addressed.

To schedule the automatic creation of a disk image click:

  • the "Start" button
  • then "Control Panel"

Double left click:

  • "Scheduled Tasks" icon/image
  • "Add Scheduled Task"

The "Scheduled Task Wizard" will appear (see image below).

  • Click the "Next" button:

Click:

  • "DriveImage XML" to select it on the list
  • the "Next" button
  • Type a name for your scheduled task.
  • Choose how often you want your drive image created.
  • Click the "Next" button.
