Take a minute to review the configuration changes that can be made to the AVG e-mail scanner. Double left click the multicolored AVG icon (yellow, black, green, red squares) in your computers system tray (bottom right corner next to the system clock).
Click the:
  1. words "E-mail Scanner" to highlight them (located under the "Component" heading)
  2. Properties" button (bottom right corner of the "Control Center" window)
  3. "Configure" button to open the "Test Options" window
avg antivirus test options window

Click in the box to remove the check mark next to "Certify mail" under both the "Check incoming" and "Check outgoing mail" headings. Why? If these checks are not removed AVG adds a short statement at the end of any e-mail you send and receive. The statement will be similar to the following:

"No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Version: 7.5.488 / Virus Database: 269.13.32/1033 - Release Date: 9/27/2007 11:06 AM"

It is my opinion that you don't want to advertise the specifics of what type of antivirus application you use. This information could be used by a malicious individual to target your computer by exploiting some aspect of the design of your antivirus software. There are examples of computer viruses (worms) that target and disable the antivirus software installed on the infected computer.

While you have this dialog box open I also suggest you ensure a check mark is next to "Use heuristic message filter", "Remove attachments" and "Remove all executable files". Click the "OK" button to save your settings. E-mail file attachments will now be scanned more thoroughly. Read my article/tutorial on how to "Improve E-mail Security" to learn more about scanning/filtering e-mail file attachments.

Final Thoughts

AVG will automatically close down 30 seconds after a virus scan is completed even if a virus is detected. If you are not at your computer when AVG closes you have to remember to check AVG's test results to see if a virus was detected and what if any action was taken. I would rather have AVG remain open/running and indicate in an obvious manner that a virus was found.

If you operate a computer that connects to the Internet you need to have antivirus software installed on your computer. AVG Antivirus (Free Edition) is an excellent choice if you can't afford to purchase antivirus software. If you need more features and flexibility you might consider purchasing AVG Anti-Virus Professional Edition.

Warning: All the software I suggest is popular and well tested. However, any time you add a program/application or hardware device to your computer you run the risk of a problem developing with your computer. Always back up important files on your computer before installing any new program/application or device. You download and install any new software at your risk.

If you have any comments on how I might improve this information please offer your suggestions. Thanks, Tom
