What I like about AVG Antivirus
AVG Antivirus is simple to use, install it and forget about it. The "Resident Shield"
prevents your computer from getting infected by a virus. AVG automatically updates
itself daily to keep you protected from the latest computer viruses, Trojans and
worms. An antivirus scan runs automatically each day to make sure your computer
is not infected. The e-mail scanner automatically checks all incoming and outgoing
e-mail.
AVG has advanced features that allow you to specify, filter and remove
potentially dangerous e-mail file attachments. Many computer viruses,
worms and Trojans are spread as attachments to e-mail. You can read more about
AVG's ability to filter e-mail attachments in my article/tutorial
"Improve E-mail Security". I've tested AVG antivirus
on Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP and it worked perfectly. I have not tested it on
Windows Vista yet.
Use the AVG "Control Center" to schedule the time you want full system antivirus
scans and updates to take place. I recommend you schedule AVG updates to occur in
the morning before you check your e-mail for the first time. This ensures AVG is
updated with the most current antivirus information/signatures. You might schedule
antivirus scans to occur when you're away from your computer to avoid any
interruption while you work or play. However, make sure you review the results
of the latest antivirus scan when you return. Launch the AVG "Test Center" to
review antivirus scan test results. Right click the AVG icon (yellow, black, green,
and red, squares) in the lower right hand corner of your screen near the system
clock (this area is called the "system tray"). Click on "Launch AVG Test Center"
then the "Test Results" button to review the details of the latest antivirus scan.
AVG does not slow your computers performance as much as other antivirus products
I've tested. All antivirus products I've tested/used slow the computer down a bit
while an antivirus scan is running. Your computers hard drive is kept busy while
the antivirus application scans files stored on the drive. Some antivirus products
affect computer performance more than others by demanding a greater share of the
computers system resources (system memory/RAM, processor time/cycles). These are
additional factors to consider when choosing an antivirus solution.
Scan individual files by right clicking the file and choosing "Scan with AVG Free".
This is very useful if you just downloaded a new application, game or file and
don't want to take the time to run a full system scan. Remember to be cautious
about opening any attachments sent with e-mail. Only open attachments you are
expecting. Contact the sender to verify they sent the attachment before opening
it. Always scan any new file or application for viruses before adding or installing
it to your computer.
